at last...

been trying to get the (almost) final portion of my night rating training done for over four weeks now – the night cross country. every booking has been cancelled for one reason or another, usually the late afternoon storm build ups here in gauteng. finally got it done last night after taking off into the big black yonder with this beautiful sight off to the right.

screwed up the one touch and go by having the wrong radio frequency for pilansberg (sun city) international airport – couldn't get the runway lights on! (they're activated by clicking the transmit button five times on the aerodrome's radio frequency). thankfully there was no-one in the tower and no traffic nearby. ouch.

other than that, a beautiful, calm and gentle evening's flying. so pretty all those yellow lights and circles of veld fires.

and now, on to the test :-)

flavours of horror...

two horror movies, one humorous the other not, both excellent (and a bunch of kubrick allusions never go amiss with me ;). make sure you see them without reading too much blurb though, especially the latter – its definitely best enjoyed fresh.

hollywood has totally destroyed my favourite genre with scream and such, and now they're trying to resurrect it all with crap like saw and hostel. thank god for europe, asia and takashi miike...

opera on the grandest scale...

as a long time fan of zhang yimou's movies (whether spectacle or intimate) i've been drooling over the trailer for his latest epic curse of the golden flower for a while. so when the dvd arrived not an evening more was wasted, and...




...boyohboyohboy was i knocked out! an awesome combo of bollywood colour, italian opera, chinese martial dance, spectacle and greek myth. slow and soapy but sooo unbelievably, exquisitely, sumptuously glorious. man, what a great two hours. the image from my projector has never looked so good.
