good riddance...

bye bye, georgie boy...what a stunning photo. i'm so glad to finally see this time arrive. of course i don't really expect much will change with the new dude as the whole thing smacks of a polished pr makeover to clean up america's international nazi-imperialism image quickly and simply. i wonder who is behind obama? i guess we shall see in time. anyway, so great to see this frikkin murderer and his lying, blood-covered cronies leave the stage.

here we go again...

started a fast this morning. inspired by the works of herbert m shelton, and the amazing transformation i have undergone over the past year since my epic master cleanse, i decided to go the whole hog and just do water only. mission: to restabilise recent eating excess, get rid of more of my fifty year backlog of internal crap, and get to the bottom of all my 'food' cravings! hmmmm...and also get my weight down into the 70's to get to that mythical bmi number that says i'm not "overweight" anymore. it started as as "obese". gawd. not sure how long i'll manage this but i aim to chill quietly here at home and don't have anything scheduled that would interfere with the process.

and so, with just a little trepidation, i am quite looking forward to it...

gentle giant...

went diving this last week while at sodwana bay for a beach wedding. on the way back from one of the dives we came across a whale shark and all bundled overboard to gaze in wonder at this incredible beast.

it was around 6 to 7 metres long and was completely unperturbed by all of us diving up and down around it. it swam slowly and deliberately, a few metres off the bottom, its tail hardly moving.

truly an awesome sight and experience in the silent blue haze.

funeral for my friend's mum...

yesterday was the funeral of a really good friend's mum. she was a great, crazy, bubbly person, unlike any mother i have ever encountered, who will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved her, especially patrick. the events leading to her death were so unexpected and all too rapidly accelerated from side effects of the chemotherapy she had received. my sincere condolences patman, this rent in your soul will heal in time but know that she always lives on in you.

r.i.p. sheils. so long and thanks so much for everything.

an illegal smile...

never heard of john prine until i saw his name mentioned in this interview with roger waters. checked out a coupla cd's and wow! i'm lovin' him.

he sounds variously like a mix of bluegrass, country, folk, dylan and rock. also hear the germs and rhythms of many other songs and singers i love in him, including roger, all of whom must have found a load of inspiration here. i can't believe i've never heard of this guy. its not like he's new on the scene. strewth! where the hell have i been?

hope to see you fishin and whistlin in a-heaven...

so long albert...

albert hoffman died today aged 102. what a gift he gave us when he synthesised his 25th compound from ergot derived lysergic acid amides - lysergic acid diethylamide or lsd-25 - hoping it would be a stimulant for the respiratory and circulatory systems. it wasn't until his seminal bicycle ride on friday afternoon, april 16, 1943, after taking what he thought was a conservatively tiny dose, that he realised exactly what he had done.

"i had the feeling that i could not move from the spot. i was cycling, cycling, but the time seemed to stand still." by the time he reached his home, its furnishings had transformed themselves into terrifying objects.

"everything in the room spun around, and the familiar objects and pieces of furniture assumed grotesque, threatening forms. they were in constant motion, animated, as if driven by an inner restlessness. the lady next door [became] a malevolent, insidious witch with a colored mask."

hofmann thought he was dying and sent for a doctor, but the physician could find nothing wrong. after about six hours, the experience began to change into a pleasant one.

"after some time, with my eyes closed, i began to enjoy this wonderful play of colors and forms, which it really was a pleasure to observe. then I went to sleep and the next day i was fine. i felt quite fresh, like a newborn."

and why did he decide to sample it? "lsd spoke to me," he said. "he came to me and said, 'you must find me.' he told me, 'don't give me to the pharmacologist, he won't find anything.'"

whoohoo...where would we be without fate and you albert...

forty years of wonder and awe...

yup, its been that long since kubrick's 2001: a space odyssey first filled the cinerama screen at its world premiere at the Uptown theatre in Washington DC and about thirty six years since a naïve fourteen year old me saw it and was railroaded into the first major fork on my life journey.

i still savour every hypnotic second of this movie, again and again. the recent death of arthur c clarke (who unfortunately just couldn't resist spelling things out, and was responsible for that awfully ill conceived '2010') brought the movie back into our media consciousness, but it's the pending arrival of a blu-ray copy of the film (and, along with other blu-ray kubrick movies of course, the motivation for buying my first blu-ray player) that has me filled with an-tici-pation and i will celebrate this anniversary by gazing again in wonder and awe at those iconic images that first warped my fragile little mind.

wow! cheers once again, stanley...
